Creating and Using Product Tags
Product tags offer a flexible way to organise and quickly locate products across your system. Unlike traditional categories, tags provide a more dynamic approach to grouping products. You can quickly add new or existing tags to products, enabling efficient searches in product listings, sales orders, and quotes.
Setting Up Product Tags
To begin, make sure you are logged into the system with a user who has a role high enough to edit products.
Navigate to your desired product, such as the Sky Hooks in this example, the tags field is in the top left corner of the header. When in edit mode to create a new tag, simply type your chosen label in the field and press space.

Note: Tags must be single words, though hyphens can connect terms, e.g., safety-glass.
The system instantly saves your tag upon pressing Enter or space, immediately associating it with the product.
When adding tags to products, the system helpfully suggests existing matches as you type, preventing duplicate entries.
You can add multiple tags to a product if required.
Using the product tags
Tags can be used as a filter in a variety of searches across Merchanter to help you find products or orders:
Filter product lists by specific tags

Quickly locate all orders containing tagged items

Identify quotes featuring particular product groups

This streamlined approach to product organisation saves valuable time while maintaining flexibility, whether you're tracking supplier-specific items, material types, or any other custom grouping relevant to your operations.
Tags by project type
Why not tag products that are commonly used for a particular type of project by a customer. So if a customer says they are building a paddock fence, select the ‘paddock’ tag and the user is shown a list of products used in building a paddock fence.
Pro Tip: Establish consistent tagging conventions early (e.g., supplier names, material types) to maximise the system's potential while maintaining clarity across teams.
Managing Your Tag Library
In the Products menu, you can find the Product Categorisation section.
Click on this you will find the tag management functions.
Under the Descriptive Tags tab, you'll find a comprehensive list of existing tags alongside usage counts.

Double-clicking any tag will edit it, Options include:
- Renaming
- Colour coding via hexadecimal values
- Description
- List of associated products
Maintaining Tags
You should also review the Unused Tags Tab from the Product Categorisation section to remove obsolete product tags,
Any items in this list with a type of Description are unassigned descriptive tags.

This will keep your tagging system lean and effective.
